Download software

An anime fansub episode usually is 170-250mb big, while manga scanlation chapter are 2-10mb big. That is why it is too expensive for fan-groups to provide free http direct downloads of fansubs and even direct download manga chapters are rare. Instead they are using bittorent and mIRC.

Bittorrent:

Bittorrent is the most popular software fan-groups are using to release their anime fansubs and manga scanlations, same as fans are using it to download them. You add a file to your download list by clicking on a link. Your download speed for a certain file depends on your upload speed for this file and the amount of other people downloading it. Those people are divided into leechers (people who are downloading and uploading it) and seeders (people who are finished and upload the completed file). There are several different bittorrent software that support bittorrent downloads.
I suggest using the azureus bittorrent client, which can be downloaded here:
http://azureus.sourceforge.net/
As a search engine for all sorts of bittorrent files distributed on different sites and trackers I suggest using: http://www.isohunt.com/
For search engines for anime and manga bittorrent files look at
Download sites.

mIRC:

In fact, mIRC is a chat-software with chat rooms. However, fan-groups add bots to their chat rooms, which can upload their anime fansubs and manga scanlations to users who request them. Requesting a file from a bot might be complicated and time consuming at times, but once have made it, you can download at full speed without the need for you to upload anything. Download mIRC software for free from here:
http://www.mirc.com/get.html
First download and install mIRC if you do not have it already.

To download files you need to join the channel of the file’s fan-group. The easiest way is to click on a link on the fan-group’s homepage or an anime search engine which for example looks like this: #Lime-Anime @ irc.rizon.net  (#channelname @ irc.servername.net)
Those links will automatically start your mIRC, join the server and join the channel. If you cannot click on this link you have to start mIRC by yourself and type:
/server -m irc.servername.net
/join #channelname

When you joined a channel you are able to download files from the bots available in this channel. Sometimes you can easily copy and paste the commands to requests files of a bot from the bot-lists of the fan-group’s homepage. Those bot-lists feature all the bot names, commands and a list with all files numbered provided on this bot. Those commands usually look like this:  /msg botname xdcc send #filenumber
If there is no bot-list you have to join the channel and type: !list
After this all the bots will write their chat request commands and short comments into this channel, but it is only visible for the one who typed “!list”.
The chat request commands will look like this:
/ctcp randomKeywodOrComment
Write this command into the channel and the bot this command belongs to will request a chat with you. Click on “accept” and a 1on1 chat window will open. Note that this is only a bot and you are not really chatting with anyone. But in those bot-chats you can use commands that are identically everywhere.
Type dir and the bot will write all his files and/or folders.
Then type cd to enter a folder shown there if needed.
Type dir again to see the files in this folder.
When you decided for a file shown there, copy only the filename (without the file size) and type “get filename”.

When you successfully requested a file you will usually see a message that says you successfully requested a certain file. If you have bad luck you will be queued behind those who requested files from this bot before you and you have to wait until they finished. You can usually see you queue number in your “successfully requested” message.
If you have luck and this bot is not used by lots of other people at the same time, your download will start immediately or it will start immediately after you clicked on “accept”. Bots often feature a download speed of more than 400kb/s.
